Move-out cleanouts for what didn't make the truck

Texas A&M had 74,407 students on its College Station campus in Fall 2025. When that many people move at once, the leftovers pile up. The Eagle reported back in 2018 that August in Aggieland means full dumpsters and household items stacked at curbs for weeks.

The dates are easy to see coming. Residence halls generally close at 6 p.m. on the Saturday after fall finals, and leases around town turn over in the same windows, so plan early. The Texas A&M move-out guide has the full calendar.

Spring 2027 finals are May 6–7 and 10–11.

Texas A&M says more than 11,000 students live on campus each year. That leaves most of the student body in apartments and rental houses across town, on leases that tend to end around the same weeks.

Texas A&M's housing contract says residence halls typically close on the day of the last May commencement ceremony. That week, every complex has a couch by the dumpster and every landlord has a list.

The usual leftovers are the same every year: a futon, a desk, a cheap bookshelf, a mattress, a TV stand, and bags of whatever didn't get packed.

If you're in a house in College Station, the city's weekly bulky pickup may handle a couch. Apartments are different. College Station sends businesses, apartments and properties outside city limits to private haulers. The complex dumpster isn't meant for furniture, and dumping next to it is how a deposit disappears.

In 2024 the City of College Station told newcomers that moving creates a mountain of unwanted items, and urged them to donate lightly used furniture instead of setting it out. Texas A&M Residence Life runs a Donate, Don't Dump drive at the end of the spring semester that works with Goodwill and other nonprofits to collect usable dorm items.

Listing a couch online or offering it to the people moving in can work, too, if you start a couple of weeks out. If time runs out, whatever's left goes in the trailer and gets hauled off.

A tenant's leftovers are one more thing standing between you and the next lease. Text photos of each room, or meet the crew for a walkthrough on a bigger unit. You get one firm price, and the unit is cleared and swept. Before-and-after photos are available when you need them for the file.
