A college town on a lease clock
Texas A&M counted 74,407 students at its College Station campus in Fall 2025. The university says more than 11,000 students live on campus each year, so most live off campus, in houses, duplexes and apartment complexes across town.
That shows up in the housing numbers. Nearly two of every three occupied homes in College Station are rented. When the semester ends, a big share of the city changes keys at the same time.
The dates that set the pace
Residence hall dates aren't lease dates. But they set the rhythm for the whole town, and they're the best early warning you'll get. Here's how the current academic year lines up:
- December: Fall 2026 finals run December 7–10, with commencement December 11–12. Residence halls generally close at 6 p.m. on the Saturday after fall finals; Texas A&M announces exact dates during the semester.
- May: Spring 2027 finals are May 6–7 and 10–11, with College Station commencement May 12–15. The housing contract says halls typically close on the day of the last May commencement.
- August: Fall 2026 move-in ran through the third week of August, with classes starting right after. The next August will follow the same pattern.
The August curb pile, and why complexes don't use it
The Eagle reported back in 2018 that August in Aggieland means full dumpsters and household items piling up at curbs for weeks. The city has said the same thing in its own words. In 2024 it told newcomers that moving creates a mountain of unwanted stuff and asked them to donate lightly used furniture rather than put it out for bulk pickup.
If you rent in a complex, the city's curbside crew isn't your answer anyway. College Station refers apartments to private haulers. Ask the leasing office what they allow at the dumpster before you leave a sofa next to it. A move-out cleanout takes that question off the table.
