The move-out calendar

Move-out goes smoother when you know the hard deadline before finals start. Here's what Texas A&M has published for the 2026–27 school year.

  • Fall 2026 finals run December 7–10, with commencement December 11–12.
  • Residence halls generally close at 6 p.m. on the Saturday after fall finals. Residence Life says the exact Fall 2026 date will be announced during the semester, so watch your email.
  • Spring 2027 finals are May 6–7 and May 10–11, and College Station commencement runs May 12–15.
  • The housing contract says halls typically close on the day of the last May commencement ceremony.
  • For reference, the Spring 2026 deadline was 6 p.m. on a Saturday in early May.

Donate, Don't Dump

Residence Life runs a spring drive called Donate, Don't Dump. It works with Goodwill and other nonprofits, and bins go out at the Commons, Hullabaloo and White Creek front desks. The current page shows the drive running from late April into early May, lined up with spring move-out.

It's the easiest home for clothes, kitchen gear, lamps and other small items that still work. Bag it, drop it, done. Big furniture is a different story, which is where the rest of this guide comes in.

Dorm or apartment: the rules are different

Texas A&M says more than 11,000 students live on campus each year. The College Station campus enrolled 74,407 students in Fall 2025. So most Aggies move out of apartments and rental houses, not dorms.

That matters for trash. College Station's weekly curb crews serve houses. The city sends apartments, along with businesses, to private haulers. If you're in an apartment complex, the city truck isn't coming for your couch. Ask the office what the complex allows. Many students end up hauling it themselves or hiring it out.

If you rent a house, you're on the city route like everyone else on the street.

Blinn students are in the same spot. Blinn has no student housing on its Bryan or RELLIS campuses; its only residence halls are in Brenham. So Blinn students in Bryan move out of apartments and rental houses. In a Bryan rental house, bulky items go out by 7 a.m. on your pickup day, no more than 48 hours early, at least five feet from fences, cars and meters. More is on our Bryan page.

The August curb pile

Anyone who's lived here knows the August curb. The Eagle has described full dumpsters and unwanted household items piling up at College Station curbs for weeks around the lease turnover. In 2024 the city told newcomers that moving creates a mountain of unwanted stuff and asked them to donate lightly used furniture instead of setting it out.

If you do use the curb at a rental house, follow the rules so it actually gets picked up. Set it out by 8 a.m. on collection day. Keep furniture in one pile and brush in another. A pile that mixes the two gets left.

Mattresses, futons and mini fridges

Texas has no state mattress recycling program. The industry's mattress recycling council runs programs only in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island. So an old dorm mattress or futon is furniture like any other: donate it if a charity will take it, put it out on bulky day if you're in a house, or have it hauled. We break down the options in getting rid of a mattress in Bryan–College Station.

Mini fridges are trickier because of the refrigerant. College Station won't pick up a freon appliance unless a certified technician has removed the refrigerant and tagged it, and the city asks you to tape the door shut. Bryan charges to pick one up so the city can remove and certify the refrigerant. Under federal rules, the last stop in the chain has to make sure the refrigerant was recovered. More on that in how to dispose of a refrigerator in Texas.

Sell it, give it away, or pass it down

The best home for a decent couch is often the next student. Post it a few weeks before you leave, not the night before. Price it to go, and set a pickup deadline that's a few days before your own move-out. If nobody bites, you still have time for plan B.

Roommates and younger friends are worth asking too. A desk, a TV stand or a bookshelf that's still solid can stay in town for another year. Just be clear about who owns what before somebody's parents show up with a trailer.

Whatever doesn't sell or get claimed by the last week needs a real plan. Don't leave it in the unit hoping it disappears. In most leases, that turns into a charge, and in a dorm it holds up your checkout.

Leaving a rental in good shape

Off-campus move-out has its own checklist. A few habits make the deposit conversation easier.

  • Read the move-out section of your lease. It usually says what has to be gone and how clean the unit should be.
  • Empty every room, closet, cabinet, patio and storage closet. Don't forget the freezer.
  • Take dated photos of each room after it's empty and clean.
  • If you're in a house, only set bulky items out on the right day and in the right spot. A pile that sits for a week can draw a complaint.
  • Turn in keys, parking passes and gate remotes the way the lease asks.

A plan for parents helping from out of town

A lot of move-outs get planned by a parent three hours away. Here's what works.

  • Pick the date first. Work backward from the hall closing time or the lease end, not the last final.
  • Have your student sort into keep, donate and haul. Small donations go to the drive or a thrift store.
  • Get the big pieces priced early. Text photos of the couch, mattress, desk or fridge to (214) 699-7855 for a range.
  • Decide how much help you need. With ME3 Express, the student stages it and we haul it. With Full Service, we do the heavy lifting from inside.
  • Leave a key or a gate code arrangement if your student will already be gone.

When to call a crew

If it's a bag of hangers and a desk lamp, you don't need us. If it's a sectional on the third floor, a mattress, a fridge and a lease that ends Saturday, that's the job. See move-out cleanouts in College Station for how ME3 Junk Solutions handles it, or furniture removal in College Station if it's only the big pieces.
