Clearing homesteads and land around Millican

Robert Millican and his son, Dr. Elliott McNeil Millican, settled here in the 1820s. From 1860 to about 1867 the town was the end of the Houston and Texas Central Railway, and the Handbook of Texas says it was reportedly the largest town north of Houston and Galveston. Millican incorporated in 1864 with about 3,000 people and hosted a Confederate training camp.

Then the tracks pushed on to Bryan and the businesses followed. A yellow fever epidemic hit in 1867, and Highway 6 bypassed the town in 1930. By 2000 the Handbook put the population at 108.

Millican is about 15 miles southeast of College Station, well past the reach of either city's trash trucks. Out here, getting rid of anything bigger than a kitchen bag is up to you.
