Where old furniture can go in Bryan–College Station

A worn-out couch, a dresser nobody wants, a dining set from the last house. Here's where each one can go, and how to get it there.

Ask first: can someone else use it?

If the piece is clean and solid, give it a chance at a second home. The City of College Station asks residents to donate usable items to local non-profits before putting them at the curb. In August 2024 the city told newcomers that moving creates a mountain of unwanted items, and urged them to donate lightly used furniture instead of setting it out.

Call the charity before you load up. Each one decides what it accepts, and a scratched table or a recliner with a broken lever may not make the cut. If it doesn't, the options below are still there.

Bryan's weekly brush and bulky pickup

Bryan collects bulky items like furniture once a week, Monday through Friday. Your trash cart can't hold furniture, so this is the city route. The rules that matter most:

  • Put it out no earlier than 48 hours before pickup, and by 7 a.m. on collection day (6 a.m. June through August).
  • Keep the pile at least five feet from buildings, fences, posts, hydrants, parked cars and meters, and out from under branches and wires.
  • Keep brush in a separate pile from the furniture.
  • The limit is 22 cubic yards, about one truckload, per residence per week. More than that costs extra, or you can haul it to Twin Oaks yourself.

College Station's weekly pickup

College Station picks up brush and bulky items every week. Furniture counts as bulky, along with anything else too large for the garbage cart. Set it at the curb in front of the home by 8 a.m. on collection day, and don't mix it into a brush pile. The city won't take a pile with both.

One catch for renters: College Station sends apartments and properties outside city limits to private haulers. If you live in a complex, the city curb may not be yours to use. Check with your property manager.

Hauling it to the landfill or a drop-off

Twin Oaks Landfill is in Anderson, over in Grimes County. If you live in College Station, bring ID and a utility bill showing you pay for garbage service; the city says Twin Oaks staff can also check its list.

Look up current hours and fees on the Twin Oaks Landfill website before you go. Tarp and tie the couch down before you pull out of the driveway.

Navasota residents have their own free option: up to four bulky items per load, like couches, mattresses and furniture, at the Recycle Center at 501 Fifth St. on Saturdays.

Keep the pile clean

A furniture pile that has the wrong stuff mixed in can get left behind. Bryan's brush and bulky crews won't take household chemicals, construction and demolition leftovers, concrete, brick, rock, food waste or household garbage. When they leave something, they hang a notice on your door that says why.

So pull the paint cans out of the dresser drawers and bag up the loose trash. Take the cushions off the couch and check under them too. A clean pile of furniture is the one that gets picked up.

Getting big pieces out the door

Most furniture comes out easier in parts. Take the legs off tables and couches. Pull the drawers out of dressers and carry the box empty. Unscrew the mirror from the dresser top. Measure the door before you fight a sectional through it. Two people and a set of furniture sliders beat one person and a bad back.

When it makes sense to hire it out

Curbside works great for one couch at a house with a driveway. It gets harder with a sleeper sofa on the second floor, a whole room set, a pile bigger than the city will take in a week, or a deadline like a closing date.

That's the work ME3 Junk Solutions does. Eddie and Matthew handle the lifting, loading and disposal for couches, recliners, dressers, desks and dining sets. Stairs and tight hallways get settled in the price up front. If something can be donated or reused when it's practical, it is. See furniture removal in Bryan or furniture removal in College Station.
