Hot tub removal: what's involved and where it goes

An old hot tub is part appliance, part furniture and part construction debris. Here's how it comes out, step by step, and what to plan for.

First: water and power

Nothing moves until the tub is empty and the power is off. Drain it fully, then let it sit open so the foam and cabinet can dry out. Wet foam adds a lot of weight.

Hot tubs are usually hard-wired to their own circuit. Turning off the breaker is a start, but disconnecting the wiring and capping it safely is a job for a licensed electrician. Get that done before anyone starts cutting. If there's a gas heater, have that line shut off and capped by a qualified pro too.

Whole or in pieces?

There are two ways out. A tub can come out whole, on its side, on a dolly or with a crew lifting it. Or it can be cut apart on site and carried out in sections.

Whole works when there's a clear, wide path from the tub to the driveway. Think a side gate wide enough for the shell on edge, no steps, and solid ground. That's rare. Most backyard tubs sit behind a fence, on a deck or tucked under a pergola.

Cutting it apart is slower but fits through any gate. The cabinet panels come off, then the shell gets cut into pieces with a saw. The pump, heater and plumbing come out as their own parts. The foam insulation inside makes a mess, so plan on cleanup.

What changes the scope

Two tubs that look alike can be very different jobs. That's why hot tubs are quoted on scope, not by a flat item price. The things that change it:

  • Size, and whether the tub is a molded shell or a heavier built-in.
  • The path out: gates, steps, slopes, distance to the truck.
  • Whether it sits on a deck, a concrete pad or bare ground.
  • What else is attached: steps, a cover lifter, a gazebo, decking around it.
  • Whether the pad or deck under it is staying or going too.

If you're doing it yourself

It can be done with the right gear and a couple of strong friends. Plan on a full day, and plan on it taking longer than you think.

Before you cut, check the cover. Old hot tub covers soak up water and can be surprisingly heavy, so move it off first.

  • A reciprocating saw with plenty of long demolition blades.
  • A drill and pry bars for the cabinet panels.
  • Gloves, eye protection, long sleeves and a dust mask for the fiberglass and foam.
  • A truck or trailer, tarps and straps.
  • Contractor bags for the foam and small pieces.

Where the pieces can and can't go

This is where most DIY plans stall. Curbside programs are built for household bulky items, not demolition. College Station defines bulky items as furniture, appliances without freon units, and anything too large for the cart. Bryan's weekly service takes furniture, appliances and large branches. Neither city's page we read names hot tubs, so call before you count on the curb.

What's clearly off the list: Bryan's curbside service won't take leftover construction and demolition materials, concrete, brick or rock. College Station can't take concrete, rock or contractor-generated construction debris. If the tub sat on a concrete pad and that's coming out too, the broken concrete needs its own way out.

If you haul the pieces yourself, Twin Oaks Landfill in Anderson is the place to ask. Its website lists hours, fees and what it accepts. Tie every load down for the drive.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need an electrician before a hot tub is removed?
In most cases, yes. A hot tub is usually hard-wired to its own circuit, and a licensed electrician should disconnect and cap the wiring before anyone cuts or moves the tub.
Can a hot tub fit through a backyard gate?
Whole, usually not. Most tubs are cut into sections on site so the pieces fit through a standard gate and down a side yard.
