Renovation debris: where it can go around Bryan

Old cabinets, drywall, tile and lumber don't belong at the curb. Here's where remodel waste can legally go in Bryan and the towns around it.

The short answer

For most remodel waste in Bryan, the curb isn't an option. Your choices are hauling it to the landfill yourself, renting a roll-off container, or hiring someone to load it and haul it away. Which one makes sense depends on how much you have and how heavy it is.

Start by sorting what you've got. Light, bulky debris like cabinets, trim, carpet and lumber takes up space but isn't very heavy. Dense debris like tile, mortar, concrete, brick and plaster is the opposite. That split drives every option below, from what a trailer can safely carry to how a hauler prices the job.

What Bryan and College Station curbside won't take

Bryan's brush and bulky service won't pick up leftover construction and demolition materials from landscaping, remodeling, sidewalk or driveway projects. It also turns away concrete, brick and rock. The trash cart is off-limits too: it can't hold construction or demolition debris, dirt, sod or rock.

College Station doesn't collect commercial construction and demolition debris. Small debris a resident makes can go in the garbage cart or to Twin Oaks for free with an ID and a recent utility bill. Its curbside list also rules out contractor-made construction debris, concrete, soil, sod and rock.

Rural stations and the smaller towns

Outside the two cities, the rules get tighter. Burleson County's collection stations take residential waste only. No construction materials such as shingles, sheetrock, PVC or siding. Brazos County sets its own rural site rules and posts them on its trash collection page, so check before you haul remodel scraps there. Navasota's bulky drop-off turns away commercial construction debris.

In Caldwell, the city is the only roll-off provider unless another company registers with the city. You need a city permit, and the container has to be gone within 30 days after the project ends.

Hauling it to Twin Oaks yourself

Twin Oaks Landfill is in Anderson, in Grimes County, not in Bryan. BVSWMA, which Bryan and College Station formed in 2010, runs it. College Station says Twin Oaks charges special fees for things like tires and help unloading. For hours, gate fees and what it takes from a remodel, go to the Twin Oaks Landfill website before you load the trailer.

Cover the load with a tarp and tie it down. Drywall dust and loose scraps don't stay put at highway speed, and that's true on any Texas road.

A pickup bed of drywall is one thing. A bathroom of tile and mortar is another. Dense debris gets heavy fast, so don't overload a light trailer.

Dumpster or haul-off?

A roll-off makes sense for a long project where debris comes out a little at a time. It sits in the driveway, it needs room for the drop-off truck, and you do all the loading. A haul-off makes more sense when the debris is already piled up and you want it gone in one visit, with someone else doing the lifting.

Check where a container would sit. A roll-off needs a clear spot the truck can reach, and it can mark up a driveway. With a dumpster, every piece also goes over the wall by hand, yours or your crew's.

Our guide to junk removal vs. dumpster rental walks through the tradeoffs in more detail.

Keep the chemicals out of the debris pile

Remodels leave behind more than lumber. Half-used paint, thinner, adhesives and sealers don't belong in the debris pile or at the curb. Bryan says leaving household chemicals at the curb can bring a citation.

Those leftovers go to BVSWMA's household hazardous waste collection instead, open to residents of seven Brazos Valley counties. Our post on household hazardous waste covers what it takes and what it doesn't.

How ME3 Junk Solutions quotes remodel debris

ME3 Junk Solutions handles construction debris removal for homeowners and contractors: lumber, drywall, flooring, cabinets, renovation waste and jobsite cleanup. Lighter mixed debris is priced by the space it takes in the trailer. Dense material like concrete, brick, tile, roofing, masonry and heavy drywall is quoted separately by weight and handling, because a trailer of tile is nothing like a trailer of cabinets.

Send photos, and larger or heavier jobs get a walkthrough. You get one firm price before loading. If you're partway through a remodel, staging debris in one spot as you go and having it hauled at once usually keeps things simple. If it can't be staged, ME3 White Glove takes it from where it sits, and any access work is settled in the price before work starts. See pricing for how volume works, or contractor support if you need a hauler on more than one job.

Questions

Common questions

Can leftover drywall from a remodel go in my Bryan trash cart?
No. Bryan's trash cart can't hold construction or demolition debris, and the city's brush and bulky crews won't take leftover remodeling materials either. Haul it to Twin Oaks with a covered load or have it hauled.
