Junk removal crew or roll-off dumpster: how to choose

The right choice comes down to who's lifting, how long the job runs, and what's in the pile.

ME3 Junk Solutions ·

First, a plain disclosure

ME3 Junk Solutions doesn't rent dumpsters. We load and haul. So take this with that in mind. We've tried to lay out the factors fairly, because a dumpster really is the better tool for some jobs.

With a dumpster, a container gets dropped at your place, you fill it over days or weeks, and it gets picked up. With a junk removal crew, people show up, load everything, and leave with it. Same goal, very different day. Neither one is right for every job, and plenty of people end up using both over the years.

Who does the loading

This is the biggest difference. A dumpster saves you the hauling, not the lifting. You or your crew still carry every piece out of the house, down the stairs and over the wall of the container.

With a junk removal crew, the lifting is the job. ME3 Full Service means you gather it and we do the heavy lifting. White Glove means you point at it and we take care of it, from anywhere on the property. If nobody in the house should be carrying a sleeper sofa down a staircase, that alone decides it.

Driveway space, permits and the city

A roll-off needs a flat spot it can sit on for the whole job, plus room for the truck to drop it and pick it up. Think about the driveway, the gate, low wires and branches, and whether you can still park.

Some towns regulate them. In Caldwell, the city is the only roll-off provider unless another company registers with the city, a city permit is required, and containers have to be removed within 30 days after the project ends. Other cities and HOAs have their own rules about containers on streets and driveways, so check before you order one. More on the town is on our Caldwell page.

How long it sits

A dumpster makes sense when junk shows up a little at a time: a remodel where debris comes out every day for two weeks, or a big cleanout you'll chip away at on weekends.

If the junk already exists and is sitting there now, a crew is usually faster. One visit, and the driveway is clear when the trailer pulls away. Nothing sits out for the neighbors to add to.

Heavy material changes the math

Concrete, dirt, brick, tile, roofing and heavy drywall are dense. A small pile weighs a lot. Many container companies handle weight and certain materials with their own rules, so ask exactly how they charge for heavy debris before you fill one with it.

We quote dense material separately, by weight and handling, and we tell you before work starts. For remodel debris specifically, see construction debris removal and where renovation debris goes.

Loose pile or staged pile

If you've already pulled everything to the garage or driveway, you're halfway there either way. A staged pile is the quickest kind of job for a crew too. That's ME3 Express: you stage it, we haul it.

If it's scattered through a house, attic and shed, a dumpster still needs someone to walk every piece to it. That's often where a crew wins. A garage cleanout is a good example: it's mostly sorting and carrying.

When hauling it to Twin Oaks yourself makes sense

There's a third option: your own truck or trailer and a run to Twin Oaks Landfill in Anderson. College Station residents can bring small debris they made themselves at no extra charge with ID and a recent utility bill. If you have a trailer, a free Saturday morning and a strong back, that's hard to beat for a load of yard waste or old lumber.

Cover the load, since loose scraps flying off a trailer are a hazard on any road. Before the trip, look up current hours, fees and accepted items on the Twin Oaks Landfill website. The Brazos Valley disposal guide covers the other drop-off sites.

Questions to ask before you choose

Run through these before you call anybody. The answers usually point one way.

  • Is the junk already there, or will it pile up over the next few weeks?
  • Who is going to carry it, and can they safely handle the heaviest piece?
  • Is there a flat spot for a container that won't block the garage, the street or the neighbors?
  • Does your city or HOA need a permit or have rules about containers?
  • How much of the pile is dense material like concrete, tile, dirt or roofing?
  • Are there items with special rules, like refrigerators, tires or paint?
  • Do you want it gone in one visit, or is it fine to have it in the driveway for a while?

When a crew makes sense

Choose a crew when the junk is already there, when the lifting is the hard part, when there are stairs or tight spaces, when you don't want a container in the driveway, or when you want it gone in one visit.

Questions

Common questions

Does ME3 Junk Solutions rent dumpsters?
No. ME3 Junk Solutions loads and hauls with its own truck and dump trailer. If a roll-off is the better fit for your project, that's fine to choose.
Is a dumpster or a junk crew better for a long remodel?
If debris comes out a little each day for weeks, a dumpster often fits. If it's already piled up, a crew can clear it in one visit.
