A garage cleanout checklist you can actually finish

Most garage cleanouts stall halfway with a driveway full of piles. This list keeps it moving, and keeps the wrong stuff out of the trash cart.

Before you pull anything out

Decide how the junk is leaving before you start. If you're counting on the city, check your collection day so piles don't sit in the driveway for a week. If you're getting help, set that up now. A half-finished garage is worse than a full one, because now the car can't get in either.

Grab heavy trash bags, a few boxes, gloves, a tarp and a marker. Pick a spot in the driveway for each pile. Clear a path to the garage door first so you can carry things out without climbing over anything.

The checklist

Work one wall or one corner at a time. Finish it before you move on.

Set a simple rule for the give-away pile: if you haven't used it in a couple of years and wouldn't buy it again, it goes. Duplicates go too. Most garages have three of the same hammer. Don't stop to read old papers or sort photos in the driveway. Box them, label them and go through them inside later.

Watch for things that shouldn't get tossed by accident: spare house keys, title paperwork for a car or trailer, and manuals for tools you're keeping.

  • Pull everything off one shelf or out of one corner onto the tarp.
  • Sort into keep, give away or sell, trash, and special handling.
  • Put special-handling items (paint, chemicals, fuel, tires, batteries) in their own spot, away from kids and pets.
  • Bag loose trash as you go so it doesn't spread back out.
  • Load give-away items in your car right away so they actually leave.
  • Wipe the shelf or floor before anything goes back.
  • Put back only the keep pile, heaviest items low.
  • Stage the junk where it's leaving from: the curb, the driveway or the garage apron.
  • Repeat for the next wall.

What can't go in the trash cart

Garage junk is the stuff carts were never meant for. In Bryan, the trash cart can't hold construction or demolition debris, dirt, sod, brush, rock, furniture, appliances, household chemicals or electronics.

College Station's curbside service can't take soil, sod, concrete, rock, tires, auto parts, paint, petroleum products or contractor-made construction debris. Its brush and bulky pickup does take furniture and appliances without freon, in a pile separate from brush. Bryan's weekly brush and bulky pickup also takes furniture and appliances, but leaving chemicals at the curb there can bring a citation.

For the full rundown by town, see the Brazos Valley disposal guide.

Paint, chemicals and tires

Most garages have a shelf of half-used paint, bug spray, pool chemicals and motor oil. Most of that shelf is a job for BVSWMA's household hazardous waste collection.

TCEQ's list puts the next one on Oct. 24, 2026, at 3380 University Drive East in College Station.

The Twin Oaks site has the list of what it takes. Our post on household hazardous waste in the Brazos Valley has the details.

For nearly empty paint, TCEQ says a can less than one-quarter full can be opened and left to dry in a ventilated area, then thrown away once dry.

Old tires are their own problem. Bryan residents can take up to eight passenger or light-duty tires per visit, off the rim, to the city's Used Oil and Tire Recycling Center on Waco Street. The tire disposal guide covers the other towns.

The old garage fridge

A second fridge or chest freezer is common, and it's one of the trickier things to toss. College Station won't pick up a freon appliance unless a certified technician has removed the refrigerant and tagged it. Bryan charges to pick up refrigerators, freezers and window units and certify the refrigerant, even if the unit is empty, unless it was pre-certified.

Empty it, clean it and tape the doors shut before it goes anywhere.

Doing it yourself vs. getting help

Plenty of people do the sorting and let someone else do the hauling. ME3 Junk Solutions has levels built for that. With ME3 Express, you stage it, we haul it: you put everything in the driveway or on the garage apron and the crew loads it. With ME3 Full Service, you gather it, we do the heavy lifting: you point to what goes, and Eddie and Matthew carry it out, load it and haul it. ME3 White Glove covers tight spaces, attics over the garage and anything that needs to come apart first.

Either way, you text photos for a range, and you get one firm price before anything is loaded. Volume pricing, from a quarter load up to a full trailer, is on the pricing page. For the full service, see garage cleanouts.

Questions

Common questions

Can I throw leftover paint cans in the trash after a garage cleanout?
TCEQ says a can less than one-quarter full can be dried out in a ventilated area and thrown away once dry. Fuller cans should go to BVSWMA's household hazardous waste collection; check the Twin Oaks website for the next date and what it accepts.
For a garage job, what's the difference between ME3 Express and ME3 Full Service?
With ME3 Express you move everything to the driveway or garage apron and the crew loads it. With ME3 Full Service you just point to what goes and the crew carries it out, so it costs more than Express.
